More like art graduates. get 70k debt to work at starbucks for $8 an hour lolololololololololololololol

    • mustae says:

Serves them right for being hipsters who think they’re better than everybody else. But starbucks is too mainstream

      • youhavebeendominatedcupcake says:

        All Artists = uptight Hipsters?

Gosh, I need to get me some tight jeans. I had no idea. I didn’t even think I liked coffee!

      • leu2002 says:

Odd. It seems like..almost like..you think YOU are better than everyone else.

But I guess that’s the source of all hypocrisy.

For the record, EVERYONE in college works at that kind of job until they’re out of school. You’re probably a high school dropout and a janitor you holier-than-thou f**k. Stop being such a stupid c*nt.

    • erin says:

this is why i’ve gone for a science career and left art as a hobby!

  2. Ch3rrybomb says:

Did he mean arts as in “fine arts,” “art,” or “art’s”? o0

    • CoolStory says:

I dunno, but Technical Communication would fall under “Arts and Humanities” so I hope this post wasn’t including that whole sector. Copyediting for Publications or even plain old Technical Writing are both growing fields with monetary offerings on par with many science and engineering degrees (introductory salary is lower and brings down the average, but after a few years salaries go up to 50-100K/yr so whatever).

  3. Flood says:

In before raging lib arts majors. I constantly hear crap from them here, trying to compare themselves to the engineering students…

    • Oz says:

To be honest, if it weren’t for the job market, I’d happily enroll in LAs or General Studies.

      But hey, that’s life -_-

    • Will says:

I am sorry but unless your in one of the hard sciences you don’t have the right to talk to us engineering students.

      • R says:

All hail the great and mighty engineering students! We are not worthy!

“you don’t have the right to talk to us engineering students”
Excuse me, but who are the snobbish hipsters here again?

  4. GPTS says:

Living in a state full of “art” majors… I am going to print this out and post it on every jobs board I can find…

  5. mmmmmbop says:

Don’t forget to tip the English Lit guy busing the tables.

  6. Linkhs says:

As a studio arts major, I take offense to this post.

*I* work in a grocery store.

  7. 4skin says:

    Hm, that’s funny.
I don’t see the makers of Pixar films serving fries.

  8. Robert says:

Why everyone gotta hate on the artists? Do what you love at university/college otherwise there’s no point in going at all.

    • Mike says:

      Except for…you know…MONEY.

      • Rob says:

So it’s better to spend 3/4 years of your life doing something you don’t love? That’s a cold way of looking at the world.

        • troll says:

It is better to do something you enjoy and make six figures that do something you love but have to live with your mom.

          • RM says:

THANK YOU. I love musical theatre, but realized that I probably wasn’t going to make much of a living that way, and I wouldn’t have a certain future. I’d be willing to do that, but I want a family at some point and if job security in something I don’t enjoy quite as much means I can have a family, *and* do theatre on my own time, then I think I’ll be quite happy.

What I don’t get is that in a lot of artistic industries, no one will care that much if you have your degree. They’re audition/portfolio based for a reason. If you spend those years constantly honing your skills and creating a diverse and creative portfolio instead of taking random “theoretical” classes, you could easily be ahead of the game in several different artistic fields, since they take experience and ingenuity, and not all that much specific knowledge of the kind that universities are made to teach.

        • R says:

Kind of hypocritical, isn’t it? People in it for the money are telling others that they’re snobs, even though they’re doing what they feel is best regardless of money. You just have to laugh at the ignorance at some point.

  9. Wafflekitty11 says:

Just because someone is good at drawing, became an art graduate, and is trying to make their dream come true means they’re dumb over-confident hipsters??

    • CoolStory says:

Most engineering students have crack-down hard core consérvative parents so they can’t see it any other way. Make the most money or die in a fire, feel no empathy, dole out no remorse.

  10. Spencer says:

Maybe you shouldn’t be involved with “arts” if you can’t bother to proof read something.

  11. Liran says:

I’m possibly going to major in Graphic Design, but that’s okay because 90% of the students that graduate from the college I’m going to work in their intended field within 6 months of graduation. ;)

  12. lola says:

well, wake up. there´s plenty of space for artists out there, if they´re any good and if they´re searching in the right place. hint: this site wasn´t made by itself either!

  13. SuprSaiyanRockr says:

I was a Lib-art major, but then I came to my senses and started working on radio.

  14. Corey Hanson says:

Does this apply to Animation students?

  15. Atheissimo says:

Can’t tell if talking about ‘Art’ as in sculpture and painting or ‘Arts’ as in every subject that isn’t engineering or hard science.

    • Will says:

ether way there isn’t that much demand for English, or philosophy majors ether. so pretty much the argument stands ether way.

      • dot says:

I’m majoring in architecture, yet my school gives a B.A. (Bachelor of Arts) rather than an B.S. (Bachelor of Science). So technically architecture is an art, but most people wouldn’t consider it a useless degree.

  16. Akuto Sai says:

I’m going into Graphic arts major with a minor in creative writing.I’m also taking business classes. Don’t be like the stupid ones who think that drawing is a career. There is a business in arts. And don’t be all hipster.

    • R says:

Out of the hundred people in my art program, there isn’t one who behaves like a hipster. That’s a strawman argument. Everyone in my program, though, is also taking communications, business, computer programming, etc.

Thank you for pointing this out, as it’s true no one does “traditional art education” anymore. A small minority of people may go into college thinking they can make a career out of guitar playing or drawing or whatever, but they come to in freshman year and make smarter decisions than what this stereotype would like to portray.

  17. shoroza says:

i KNEW it, being an artist is now considered hipster. *sigh* goodbye career…
but now i have no idea what to do, because drawing is literally the only talent i have in this world full of retards who think they’re better than you. i guess i should just hang myself then. goodbye, cruel world!

  18. Tranklizer says:

Hey, artists are important and under-appreciated in today’s society. Every single product you have ever used had to go through some kind of artist before it could be used by the public. So look around you, and think about how much “art” has made it into your life.

    • Will says:

i am sorry but i think you mean engineer. not artist. anyways there is just as much beauty in a fine tuned complicated machine as there is in some frilly exterior.

      • Tranklizer says:

Have you ever heard of product design? Yes, engineers do create the functionality of a machine, but an “artist” had to design how it would look. When I said artists, I’m not referring to fine artists like with drawing and painting. I’m talking more about digital artists that probably do most of their professional work on a computer. Speaking of computer, the computer you used to type your comment on had to go through one of these “artists” and engineers before you could use it.

      • R says:

The people who design concept cars for Audi, BMW, VW? Artists. Not engineers, artists.

The web page you’re commenting on was designed by a web designer. The font you’re typing with was designed by someone.

      • 'Nuther Guest says:

Will, I know this is going to be hard for you to hear, but engineers are not the only people on the planet who are worthy of life. I know. It’s hard. You’ll stop crying soon, I promise.

  19. LEM says:

Is this made by the same person who made the graph edit?
Did someone draw better than you or something? and you’re feeling that maybe this will make them feel bad?

haha guess what? Me Gusta, NO, Y U NO guy? those are memes drawn by an artist…and an “artist” designed Memebase.

the worst thing ABOUT hipsters is the fact that they think that their snobby, obscure sense of “style” means they have a clue about art!
every painting class I’ve ever taken…there are hipsters yes…and they suck..and they fail the class, then blog on their iphones about how the teacher doesn’t know art….

hope you liked every comic book/animated movie you’ve ever seen EVER dumbass….

    • Adam says:

      AMEN BROTHA!

    • RM says:

To be fair, no one is making money off the memes. I don’t think anyone is saying that art isn’t useful, just that, right or wrong, it’s undervalued in our society and doesn’t have a good job market, since it’s unfortunately the “default” degree for a lot of people.

I know intelligent, hardworking people in humanities. No problems with them. I think that intelligent, hardworking people will go far (barring a few unfortunate examples cause sometimes s**t happens) in whatever industry they choose. I also know far more who have no sense of direction or how their chosen industry works, and who don’t really work at making themselves stand out to employers. On the other side of the scale from hipsters (though just as impractical) are the people who have a romanticized idea of art (which is typically what people think of really) and don’t treat it as an industry with practical demands. The stereotypes do come from somewhere.

  20. Sad Smitty says:

It is so funny watching my 24 year old sister run her life into the ground trying to get her art degree. thankfully she is stupid and lazy, so she put us too far in debt with all of the expensive art schools.

  21. Timothy says:

That awkward moment when you’re an art student

  22. Rob says:

It’s ironic that the art students are being criticised as ‘hipster snobs’ when it is in fact the engineering and science graduates who are making themselves out to be better than everyone else. The truth is that any graduate is going to have a difficult time finding a job after graduation, not just artists.

    • R says:

It almost makes me think that the engineering majors are the ones posting these. If that were true, it’d be awesomely ironic that the people saying artists are “snobs” are constantly insulting them for no reason other than to make them feel horrible about what they like to do.

  23. Dan says:

You know, you art majors are totally right.
I would LOVE for my coffee maker box to look pretty and have some creative writing on the back.

It will look great holding my old Christmas decorations in the attic!

  24. R says:

Uh oh, I’m a Multimedia Arts student double majoring in computer networking and programming. Better put me on this list too.

Honestly, I get that people here hate art students. I got that after the 500th post like this, but it wouldn’t be so bad if the stereotype weren’t so grossly misinformed. Most of my classmates have jobs lined up in film/sports/multimedia agencies and studios. That’s why we get internships during college classes.

Now, what would be funny is a meme based on how law students are no longer guaranteed a $200,000 salary, and more and more of them are ending up crushed under student loans. Those people are the hipsters thinking they’re better than everyone else, not the people who just like inventing.

By all means, go on trollin’, so long as it makes you feel better about your own career choice (the main reason I’m guessing that these posts still exist), but cloud networking and web design are fast growing fields, among numerous others. At least know the facts before spouting a bronze-age stereotype.

    • RM says:

Yeah, but it’s the computer networking and programming parts that will net you a fantastic job, even if it is in the graphic art industry. When people talk about art degrees, they normally mean fine arts: as in, people who don’t treat art as an industry and think that trying to get people to pay for a hobby is poetically tragic or something. You definitely don’t fit this category.

  25. 'Nuther Guest says:

My brother recently graduated with a degree in engineering. Guess what? No jobs. He had to move back in with the parents and go back to school for a few more degrees before he found someone who would hire him.

    • RM says:

No offense, but that’s definitely a problem with your brother (and/or the recession in general) and not with engineering. Any company that produces any product will hire engineers in some capacity or other. It’s practically impossible for engineering to have a bad job market compared to other industries because it’s a necessary part of so many.

DISCLAIMER: You could replace engineering with business or technology or software etc. and say something similar, but my point still stands. Certain fields are basically universal.

  26. lilhagood says:

Artists are important in life but there is no need for new ones. the people who make all of the new designs for things probably got their jobs years ago. too many people all trying to get the same job

  27. that dog has a poofy tail!!!! says:

Was there a fairly odd parents reference in the title (Large fries, chocolate shake)?
